This is the finest and longest trek in Bhutan. It is very popular for its remoteness, monasteries, fortresses, fascinating villages and magnificent mountains. The trek starts from Paro, where we head off towards northwest bordering Tibet. Mt. Chomolhari (7314m), Bhutan’s second highest peak and Jichu Drake (6858m), which was first climbed by British and Indian joint venture in 1988 is the highlight of this trip. The total distance of this trek is approximately 150 miles and it involves crossing high pass of up to 5000m. We do have rest days in-between to acclimatize. Including a stay near the hot spring of Gasa. Rich flora and fauna is evident as we pass through the semi-tropical and alpine forest in the first couple of days.
The main villages in this region are Lingshi, Laya and Gasa, where the local tribesmen encounter few visitors. Here yak-herders take their animals to the pastures at the foot of the mountains. The natives of this remote area, where life has remained unchanged for centuries, wear costumes woven from yak-hair and distinctive conical bamboo hats. The wildlife of the area includes the forest dwelling takin, the odd looking national animal of Bhutan, Himalayan black bears, large flocks of blue sheep in the higher reaches and, the rarely seen, snow leopard. This trek combines a variety of flora, stunning landscapes, remote villages and dramatic views of the high snow-capped peaks. This trek has been successfully run since 1988.
